And If So, How?

Why Do I Keep Picking Up Other People’s Negative Energy: And How Do I Get Rid Of It?
Okay, moving on! I think the biggest question last week’s post might have generated was in regards to space clearing. Many of us, having found ourselves in a place of feeling imposed upon by someone else’s negative energy, have participated in some sort of clearing or cleansing ritual. The most common of these is smudging. If you don’t know what smudging is, you can read this post from Body Mind & Soul: Space Clearing Basics.
After absorbing the principles of resonance and dissonance, we may be wondering, does space clearing really work? If so, how? If the dissonance we’re experiencing is originating within us, what purpose does a clearing or cleansing ritual serve? And why do I feel better when I smudge or ring bells or clear energy some other way?
Let me reassure you, space clearing does work! Don’t feel compelled to throw out all your sage wands and abalone shells after reading last week’s post. Unless your own guides are directing you to do so, of course.
There is one primary function to a clearing or cleansing ritual: to introduce a new frequency.
This can be done with one of two purposes …
- To negate or neutralize one vibration by introducing an opposing one
- To lift or change a vibration by introducing a higher/stronger one
The first purpose is the one most often employed in a space clearing. The second might be more often seen in something like a space blessing.
For every vibration, there is an opposing vibration. This is the nature of our physical realm. If one thing springs into being, its opposite does so simultaneously. This is not conjecture. This is science. Studies have been done in which researchers have been able to identify the wavelength of a noise and create the noise with an opposing wavelength. The result? Silence. (You can read The Hidden Messages in Water, by Masaru Emoto, for more on this phenomenon.)
This law of opposites is in fact where our resistance, or our experience of dissonance, springs from. When we assign more value to one quality and consciously engage in expressing it, we simultaneously assign less value to its opposite and subconsciously engage in repressing or resisting it. We must then flow through this process of resonance, dissonance, enlightenment, allowing, and integration, in order to bring those into harmony.
Many people, not recognizing that the dissonance they feel is originating within themselves, reach for their sage or other tools in a desperate desire to move out of their state of discomfort. The ritual then works, they feel better, and they put their tools away believing the negativity has been permanently dispelled. Unfortunately, because they did not move through the integration process, they are destined to encounter the need to smudge or clear or cleanse all over again. While this may work in the moment, it stunts their spiritual evolution, keeping them stuck in a pattern or cycle from which they cannot escape.
So why access these neutralizing tools at all?
The purpose of something like sage is to bring the relief we need in order to move through the integration process—not to help us avoid it.
Sometimes the feelings are so intense, especially when fear is activated, that it can be near impossible to generate our own opposing frequencies or even think clearly about what we are experiencing. This makes integration a real challenge. Introducing an opposing frequency like sage allows us to neutralize the overpowering emotions so we can then start to move through the steps of integration. In time, we should reach a level of experience that we don’t even need the assistance of something like sage to integrate anymore.
Of course, these tools still have much to teach us. Were we to integrate most of our disenfranchised self and continue to work with something like sage, we would receive a deeper, richer level of teaching from the plant. This is essentially what shamans do. They utilize plant medicines to move through their own healing integration process, then they go deeper, becoming a real student of the plants, enabling them to guide others. This student-teacher relationship is not required of everyone, but rather something you should only enter into if you feel called.
So, here is what an enlightened space clearing should look like:
- After encountering an experience of dissonance—being triggered by someone who is not behaving according to our preference—we might go home and smudge to calm down.
- Rather than stopping there, once we feel more secure we then explore our trigger and the emotions it created in order to identify that potential within ourselves that is crying out for our awareness.
- With that clearly identified, we can then choose to introduce an elevated frequency, such as a crystal associated with love or balance or peace, to assist us in the integration process and help us achieve harmony (resonance) once more.
You might notice in this example that I included both purposes for introducing a new frequency at different stages. That is because the best clearing practices involve both neutralizing negative energy and introducing positive energy. In the introduction of positive energy, the second purpose wherein we attempt to raise a vibration by bringing in a higher one, we employ a much greater opportunity to integrate. In fact, even without a comprehensive understanding of resonance, dissonance, and harmony, we are far more likely to experience spontaneous enlightenment and integration through the introduction of higher frequencies because of the law of opposites. In other words, by introducing the frequency of peace, I become aware of where and why I am lacking peace in my life. As my awareness of peace grows, so does my awareness of its opposite, multiplying my opportunities for integration and harmony.
I hope, having reached the end of this post, that you not only continue to employ your tools and rituals for clearing or cleansing, but that you are able to do so more consciously, deriving greater benefit from them than you might before. If you still have questions or comments, please leave them below and I will do my best to address them with the help of my guides.
