- Achievement Hijacking, a.k.a. "the Law of Abundance"
This way of viewing and using the Law of Attraction (as the "Law of Abundance") is essentially the root of the problem, it's the source from which all our other issues with it, which follow in this post, spring. The Law of Attraction is so much more than a short-order cook for our culturally programmed desires. It is fundamentally a vehicle for the evolution of consciousness. This is very obviously displayed in what has been called the "100th Monkey Effect". The long and short of the "100th Monkey effect" is this: scientists working with wild monkeys on an island observed that once the monkeys they were working with learned to wash the sand off the sweet potatoes they were given in order to be able to eat them, the monkeys on other islands began doing the same thing, or were able to pick up on this new behavior far quicker than the original monkeys. Now, knowing that there's no monkey telegram service, the question becomes, "how did the behavior spread so rapidly?" And the answer, in theory, is the morphic field, a.k.a. the Law of Attraction. But not as we typically think of and use it. We're so used to seeing the Law of Attraction as a means to get what we want, that it may take some time for you to begin to understand how it was active in this example. And in truth, the morphic field theory goes well beyond what we generally call the Law of Attraction. But both are operating by the principle of resonance, and therefore are deeply connected. I tend to look at it like the Law of Attraction is simply one function of a much larger law or principle which can be called "the morphic field" or simply, resonance.
- You Are Not Your Circumstances
Because we believe we are attracting everything to us, we blame ourselves for every uncomfortable experience, and we identify with every experience, losing sight of where we end and the outside world begins. I'm not denying the activity of resonance at work in our lives all the time (nor am I denying unity consciousness or the notion that we are all one). I'm not denying how much our subconscious dictates what we experience because of its profound and sneaky ability to influence our one true power, the power of choice. But I am saying we are oversimplifying it. I am saying we take responsibility for things beyond our control. And I am saying we identify with our circumstances, which inflate our ego when things are going well (or according to our preference), and fill us with unwarranted shame when things are not going so well (or not according to our preference). You don't have to feel bad because your life isn't perfect. Let me repeat that, you don't need to feel bad because your life isn't perfect. You will feel uncomfortable with the things you don't like, and that's normal. But your circumstances do not make you any more or any less deserving than anyone else. Of course, continue to work on yourself. Seek to shine some light on those dark, subconscious recesses that may be driving you. But your boss' bad behavior is not your fault. Neither is the loss of your loved one. Neither are the socioeconomic conditions you were born into (and must raise yourself from). This idea that we are all-powerful, and therefore all-responsible, is ludicrous and damaging. Don't use the Law of Attraction as a new means of punishing yourself. Yes, you are connected to everything, but you do not supersede everything. There is a difference.
- Influence vs. Control
Control is an easy trap to fall into. Most of us may not want to admit to it, but we'd love to call all the shots. It's the only way to have everything according to your preference all the time. But if you've ever seen a spoiled child amok in a public place, you can recognize how destructive that kind of power is. If you're not sure whether you're using the Law of Attraction from a position of influence or control, ask yourself this:
How frustrated am I with this circumstance/experience/result?
Frustration is a sure sign we are trying to control something outside the realm of our power. It means we are expending energy in an inefficient manner. It is the proverbial spinning of the wheels. However, when we step back enough to realize we cannot control what is beyond us, but we can attempt to influence it, then we can begin to work with the Law of Attraction in a way that may prove beneficial, or at least less upsetting.
- You Are An Amalgam of Desires
Many of the things we attempt to attract through conscious manipulation of the Law of Attraction are often dictated by our cultural programming. We want a certain job or a certain lifestyle. Maybe we want a better job or more income. So we direct our conscious focus in this way, and we do whatever we can activate the Law of Attraction on behalf of this aim. But in some cases, we meet with frustration or mediocre results at best. And we allow that to make us feel bad about ourselves, or like we're doing something wrong or are undeserving. But the truth is, your conscious, culturally acceptable desires are only one small part of the whole of you. Other parts may be sending very different signals. Your subconscious harbors all the feelings and impulses and drives you aren't aware of. It often sends a far stronger signal than your conscious mind. Rather than working against the subconscious, which is what many of us attempt to do, we should see this as an opportunity to work in service of the subconscious. What deeply rooted aspects of ourselves require acknowledgement and the meeting of their own needs? Not meeting with success utilizing the Law of Attraction doesn't make you a failure, and it doesn't necessarily mean your efforts need to be reevaluated. In some cases, it's your desire that needs editing, which brings me to my next point ...
- You Cannot Bypass the Heart
The heart is, in my experience, the most crucial aspect of our being. It houses our emotional guidance system, and it is the seat of our sense of connection. The heart is the first organ to form in the human embryo. And it is the gateway between our higher and lower chakras, making it quite literally the gateway between heaven and earth, both our spiritual and physical selves. The heart has been shown to hold its own neurons and intelligence (read more on that here). The physical heart is, in essence, a manifestation of the energetic heart, both of which are central to our being. Thoughts and emotions carry vibration, but emotional vibration is usually the stronger of the two. Our feelings often override our logic. And even if we manage to think our way to an action or resistance of an action, it does not stop the feeling behind the impulse to take that action. We cannot control our feelings. We can only control our choices. Which is both far more power and far less power than we tend to realize we hold.
The heart acts as a conduit or mediator between all aspects of our being, including our higher self and our conscious self. The emotional resonance emitted by the heart is a powerful indicator of our truest and deepest desires. But in our culture, we view emotions as unnecessary and inconvenient, to be repressed and ignored. We have all but completely negated the position of the heart as central to our being, and when we try to work with the Law of Attraction, we rarely take this crucial aspect of ourselves into account. Nothing could be of greater disservice to our well being and purpose. And it may be that in many instances, we can only get so far with the Law of Attraction because we are trying to attract things mentally which we are in conflict with emotionally. Your emotions are not the enemy. They point you in the direction of what you need most, though they can be easily misinterpreted, especially since we are so unaccustomed to working with them.
If we are going to attempt to utilize the Law of Attraction, it should always be from a heart-centered perspective, taking into account our heart's desires to the best of our ability. The inherent struggle is that our heart's desires are very often in contrast with the programming we received and what we think we want. It can take great effort to even reconnect with this all-important aspect of self, and then begin to sync up with its signal rather than fight it. But the heart sends the greatest energetic signal and has the highest impact on resonance, regardless of mind. And this is where we find the greatest difference between what we're asking for and what we're getting. Instead of working synergistically, mind and will subject to heart, we are creating interference in the pure signal of the heart and encountering mixed results.
